All about Daisy …

Imageso not every posting is going a review of a movie, political ramblings, etc … sometimes i just want to write about what happened during the day…. and today was a good day for daisy …

she had her third soccer game today (ever) and i was so impressed with her … she plays on a coed team (they are only in kindergarten)  and at game one, although she got a few kicks in .. there was alot of talk talk talk with one of her friends while the the action was going on … but today … today was different. she was really in there, kicking the ball and dusting it up with the boys … at one point she took a shot on goal, a really good shot … unfortunately it was the wrong goal … but it was saved so no big deal these kids barely know the rules anyway …. so the game is ticking down and its the final minute and she’s got the ball and she’s running and kicking it down the field and next thing i know she takes a shot and Score !!! her very first goal … she was so excited she was still beaming and shouting out “i scored” all the way home. i have to say what better feeling is there than watching the smile light up their faces … i was really very proud of her.

a few hours later we went to Outdoor Movie Night … run by the Emerson police department, it’s a really great event with a bouncy house, a bouncy slide / maze / mountain, hot dogs, popcorn, zeppolees,  ice cream and of course, a movie … we went just the two of us as rosey has a bit of a runny nose and julie figured it was best to keep her home … so daisy had a great time hanging out with her friends … the funny part was she only watched about 15 minutes of the movie … but she did score again … 8 glow sticks … not bad for one day ….

Hunter S. Thompson – Where the Buffalo Roam

ImageWas surfing around late night last night and came across this movie that had just started called Where the Buffalo Roam … it’s about a sliver of the life of Hunter S. Thompson … portrayed here by Bill Murray. The move came out in 1980 which naturally dates it a bit, and i have to say though it wasn’t the artsy cinematic film Depp’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was, i thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend anyone who digs his literature to check out … not that Depp did a bad job in his movie, don’t get me wrong i liked that one too … there was just something here that I thought was really worth viewing … it had great humor, tons of drugs, and for some reason really inspired me to want to dust off the old “typewriter” and start writing again … or at least hit Amazon and read through some more of his works …

Scary News from Kenya

OB-YZ701_0921na_G_20130921115044I was doing a bit of volunteer work today riding around and knocking on doors with one of the candidates for Emerson town cancel when on the radio a report came on about a mass assault in nairobi, kenya … for most people this probably wouldn’t have much of an effect but my buddy schutz and his family have been living down there for a year or more, and i turned up the radio to get a little more information … they didn’t say much, i guess not much info was out at the time, and i was pretty sure they were ok down there but you just never know … anyway as of right now it seems this is an Al Queda linked attack which resulted in the deaths of 39 people, 300 injured, and a standoff situation with hostages as i write … the good news is that in checking out facebook schutz’s wife posted on his account that they were not there and were all safe … it’s truly a terrible story and i have to wonder about why Al Queda attacks Kenya (the 2002 hotel bombing was also Al Queda linked I believe) … so anyway this blog bit goes out to them and all the families that are affected by this tragedy … stay safe and may noone else lose their life so senselessly ….

The News is Bumming me out

NavyYardFollow0671379516471now it’s nothing new that the news is a bummer … unless its a fluff piece its going to be depressing … but today i’m revisiting feelings that i just don’t like the way we cover news. yesterday there was a mass killing at the Navy Yard in DC (note to self to write a seperate blog entry on why we’re such a gun loving society), and while that’s big news for sure, there are other things going on in the world (flooding in Colorado / Syria issues among the top ones) … and i just can’t help but get bummed out by the fact that misery sells … its’ just so ridiculous that the news organizations run one top story to death until the next big thing comes along, then they bump everything else to air 24 hours straight of just the one big story … and the dramatic graphics and music which are designed to make it more … well dramatic … just make me sad … it’s misery as entertainment …

the only bright spot as i cruised the various cable news broadcasts was the (relatively) new Al Jezeera America, which was still airing stories on the flooding and as I type is running a story on Japanese Sumo wrestling … now i’m not saying i’m a big fan of theirs (they are boring and i’m not sold on the fact that i shouldn’t ban them outright) but at least they are making an effort to do something a little different… i think this approach may pay off for them if they keep it up …

that’s about all i have for now … i noticed it’s been a long time since i’ve written … i’m going to have to make an effort to change that going forward.
